Long considered the godfather of stencil graffiti art, Xavier Blek le Rat studied painting and architecture in Paris. Since 1981 he has had a great influence on today’s graffiti art movement, his main motivation being social consciousness and the desire to bring art to the people. British graffiti artist Banksy has acknowledged Blek’s influence saying “every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier.”

The gallery is very pleased to commence 2010 with a solo exhibition by Brisbane artist Erin Smith. Erin uses words as her medium, literally, by creating pictures out of words and lettering digitally manipulated so that the assembled typography no longer describes an idea, but embodies it.
Accompanying this exhibition of works on paper is a 30 second DVD RAPID EYE MOVEMENT, documenting the response to activities that occur during the rapid eye movement stage of sleep.
Opening Friday, 12 February 2010 from 6—8pm
