Brisbane jeweller Ari Athans paints.

Through her work Athans shares with us her love of science and respect for what comes out of the ground.  Minerals and gems are not only remembered and reanimated, but also enriched by a new complexity of meaning.

Layers of sheet-steel shift beneath the integrity of the stencilled compositions applied to their surfaces.

I paint on mild steel for various reasons. It is a natural progression from jewellery so I have an  affinity with it. By rusting the surface I can create texture and layers that depict the passing of time, which happens slowly in geology but quickly in mining.
