Andrea Fisher’s artwork crosses boundaries, collapsing the categories which once confined art’s interpretation. In ways that challenge our preconceptions, Fisher moves between cultural and artistic modes. Jewellery and photography work together in series where their interrelation creates a conversation about the changing mores of contemporary culture.
Fisher’s foremost desire is to use her artwork to reclaim agency of her heritage through the recontextualisation of her ancestral history. History changes with its retelling, and like the other members of the proppaNOW artists collective to which she belongs, Fisher ‘demonstrates a defiance to remember’. The sombre reminder contained in her work is relieved by the artist’s ironic humour, however, which invites us to participate in an on-going and edgy dialogue about the Australian society.
